Au début du VII^e siècle, un moine chinois, Hiuan Tsang, partit de Xi'an pour une invraisemblable randonnée en direction de l'Inde. Sa mission : trouver les écritures sacrées du bouddhisme. Le pèlerinage de Hiuan Tsang fut, pendant plusieurs siècles, à l'origine d'une multitude de légendes. Wou Tch'eng-en, qui vécut entre 1500 et 1582, les reprit à son compte dans ce célèbre roman où notre moine, rebaptisé Tripitaka, est flanqué de compagnons mythiques dont le malicieux Roi Singe. Le récit de sa quête est un mélange unique de beauté et d'absurde, de profondeur et de sottise ; le folklore, l'allégorie, la religion, l'histoire, la satire, la poésie, tout s'y rencontre. Un classique de la littérature chinoise.
