Those who would dismiss Ike's southern victories as a tribute to his personal appeal should recall that he polled a plurality of the popular vote in the South in 1956. Those determined thus to explain away 49 per cent of the popular vote should recall that in 1952 Ike enjoyed his greatest personal popularity among the same income groups that are most consistently Republican outside the South.
