Excerpt from 1971 White House Conference on Aging: Income, Background; Issues, the Technical Committee on Income With the Collaboration of the Author
The first four sections of the paper discuss: the income needs of the elderly; goals proposed by previous conferences and groups; information on knowledge now available relative to the present income status of older people; and vital gaps in this area. These sections of the paper were prepared for the Conference by yung-ping Chen, ph.d Associate Professor of Economics, University of California at Los Angeles, with guidance from the Technical Committee on lncome.
The fifth section of the paper discusses several major issues relevant to the income needs of the elderly. The issues were formulated by the Technical Committee on Income for consideration by participants in White House Conferences at all levels and by concerned national organizations. The purpose of the issues is to focus discussion on the development of recommendations looking toward the adoption of national policies aimed at meeting the income needs of the older population. The proposals and recommendations developed in Community and State White House Con ferences and by national organizations will provide the grist for the use of the delegates to the national Conference in their effort to formulate a National Policy for Aging.
