Uen OS aires, federal capital of Argen tina, has at the present time (1917) a population of inhabitants. It is the largest city in South America, and rivals Philadelphia for the distinction of being the third city in the Western Hemisphere. It is situated in latitude 34° 36' 21 south and longitude 58° 21' 33 west. It is built in a rather poor location on the west bank of the River Plate, about 150 miles above its mouth, and about 130 miles northwest of Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital.
