A remark made in argument by Sir A. Cockburn, afterwards Chief Justice, at p. 818, that on the other side of the Atlantic the country is wild and barbarous, may be taken as limited by the context to the isthmus of Panama; the state ment would, however, have been true at that time, and many years longer, of several of the Western States of the Union.
