Excerpt from Music Under the Soviets: The Agony of an Art
To expose, so far as possible, the true nature of Soviet music is the task of this study. It is a complex task, not only because of its novelty and many-sidedness, but also because of the complexity which Soviet music reveals in its relation to Soviet life as a whole. However, it is a task which should not be deferred and one which, in the author's opinion, is a cardi nal and decisive one in contemporary musicology.
