Excerpt from Education in the German Federal Republic

This study aims to present a bird's eye view of elementary, secondary and higher education in west Germany today. The hope is that it will aid in a better understanding of the German school system and provide some assistance in the interpretation of German education.

The German Federal Republic (deutsche Bundesrepublik) is divided into ten independent states or Laender each having its own government, parliament, and laws. The ten states are united together in the German Federal Republic.
