Excerpt from Le Luthier De Crémone Et Le Trésor

That famous critic of literature and of himself had said that in his youthful poems he had tried to be original in his own fashion, humbly like a bourgeois, watching closely the soul and nature, naming things of common life by their common names, but trying to relieve the prosaic side of these humble details by de scription of human sentiments and natural objects. What sainte-beuve had tried to do, Coppée attained in such Collections of poems as Les [ntz'mz'tés and Les Hum eles, in such prose tales as Contes rapz'des or Leagues et Bret/es, and in no small measure in the comedies before us. Occasionally his lyrics touch a higher tragic key, but this his professed tragedies rarely if ever suc ceed in maintaining.
