What sainte-beuve had tried to do, Coppée attained in such Collections of poems as Les [ntz'mz'tés and Les Hum eles, in such prose tales as Contes rapz'des or Leagues et Bret/es, and in no small measure in the comedies before us. Occasionally his lyrics touch a higher tragic key, but this his professed tragedies rarely if ever suc ceed in maintaining.
