They were not going out, however, as mere emigrants. Jes sie was accompanying him only as far west as Westport on the Missouri, when she would turn back and take a ship to California by the Panama route. F remont would meanwhile as sume command of a new exploring expedition to cross the Rockies by a southern pass. Nothing shows better the buoyant courage of the man than the fact that, a few months after the court-martial, he had organized his own fourth expedition.
