Excerpt from An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales, From Its First Settlement in January 1788, to August 1801: With Remarks on the Dispositions, Customs, Manners, &C. Of the Native Inhabitants of That Country

From the performance of my laborious taik I can claim no other praife than that to which a perfeverance in what was irkfome may be thought to entitle me; though to the heft of my judgment I have rendered the abridgment as perfect as it could be; having been careful to infert all that could intereft the general clafs of readers, and to omit only fuch parts as mufi, by a repetition of crimes and their punifhment, with the ofttrepeated regulations and laws confequent thereto, become diitre¿ing or tedious. Yet enough of the former ¿ill remains, to convince' every reflecting mind of the wifdom which diétated the re lieving their country from a fet of people fo hofiile to the interefis and'fafety of its more worthy inhabitants. Nor can the fpecimens here given of incurable depravity fail to convince the mof't violent Oppofers of the colo nifing fyfiem of its necellity; or at lcail to fill. Them with gratitude to that government which has, by ritmov ing fuch numbers of unprincipled people, endeavoured to protect them from depredation and violence.
