Excerpt from Grammaire Française Pratique: A l'Usage des Américains

In the treatment of personal pronouns, complete lists of both conjunctives and disjunctives have been given, with examples showing their different uses, and with rules for position and order. Relatives and interrogatives are like wise more fully treated. In the chapter on the verb, the rules for the formation of tenses from the principal parts have been brought forward so as immediately to precede the regular conjugations, inasmuch as pupils using the book have had some experience with verbs and are already in a position to use such rules. It should be made clear to them that these rules apply in general to all verbs, regular as well as irregular.

The subjunctive is presented fully, and in a way which the editor has found to be productive of the best results in his classes. A few pages have also been given to a statement of the uses of the different tenses of the indicative.

The opinion has been' expressed by teachers that the lack of english-french translation exercises was a serious one, and that the rev1510n should furnish such exercises. However, it seemed to the editor that the insertion of English exercises throughout the book would be entirely out of keeping with the author's plan; therefore they have been put in a new chapter at the end. Each of the eighteen exercises is based upon a short extract touching upon some event or character in French history. Although in most cases a suggestion is given as to when each exer cise may well be taken up, yet it was distinctly not the purpose to prepare a series of drills to illustrate single facts of grammar. Enough of such material is to be found in the preceding Chapters.
