Excerpt from Corpus Christi

In illustration of these remarks it will be seen that there have gone forth from the society statesmen like Sir Nicholas Bacon, the great Lord Keeper; soldiers like the brave Earl of Lindsey, who fell at Edgehill; sailors like Thomas Cavendish, the circumnavigator (not to mention Sir Francis Drake's connection with the College); poets like Christopher Marlowe and John Fletcher; men learned in the law or skilled in science, with a long line of learned antiquarians and of refined scholars.

But when we turn to the clerical members of the society, or to those laymen who mingled in the various religious movements, we find the most vigorous activity all down the course of history; and it will be further noticed (as hinted in the extract from Dyer) that this activity has not been all in one direction. Since the beginning of the Reformation the general trend of opinion has indeed always been in accordance with the religious freedom, as well as the sober standard of feeling, of the Church of England, but, as usually happens, where religious views are keenly asserted, there have ever been those who have broken away from the prevailing line of thought, and branched off in different directions.
