Excerpt from The French Monarchy, Vol. 2: 1483-1789

Besides these reforms there were others that Colbert hoped, but hoped in vain, to accomplish. Speaking generally, his ideas all tend towards an anticipation Of the work Of the Revolution the equality Of all Frenchmen under the King, the uniformity Of laws and institutions throughout France, the devotion Of the energies of the State to peaceful and industrial pursuits. On all these points there is a real a¿inity between his work and the work of the Convention Of 1793.
