Excerpt from The Lower South in American History

The substance of the first three papers in this volume has been given in the form of public lectures at Harvard University and at various Southern colleges. The three essays which follow are re printed by the consent of the publishers of Tke Atlantic Mont/¿y, and are but Slightly changed from the form in which they appeared in that magazine. The other two papers have not been published before. No one but myself is respon sible for any opinions or any errors, but I am indebted to many persons, North and South, for facts, for suggestions, and for criticism. The criticisms of Professor Guy Stevens Callender, of Bowdoin College, on the title essay, were particu larly helpful.
