Excerpt from The Diaries and Correspondence of the Right Hon., Vol. 1 of 2: George Rose

I have therefore thought it my duty, as his Editor, to take the line which he would have wished me to take if he 'had been alive, and to vindi cate the character Of the great Statesman to whom he was so much attached, from the unjust attacks of those who have never forgiven him the long exclusion of their party from Office. The pens of his Opponents have been dipped in gall, over¿owing in ebullitions of ill-will, misrepresentations, unfounded conclusions, and false reports and, the writers being men of mark and Of talent, very erroneous impressions have been made on the public mind, which must be disabused; and to this task I have addressed myself, with no wish to provoke hostility, but with a strong desire that the truth should be known.
