Analysis of metals and non-metals in crude oil has been receiving a great research attention and is increasingly attracting the interest due to their deleterious effects on refining operation and environment. Therefore, there is a need of analytical methods update or development of new methods for crude oil analysis. The development of new methods as well as the economic and technological importance of sulfur and some other elements in crude oil were potentially responsible for the great need of certified reference materials (CRMs). The reliability and comparability of the measurement results are completely dependent on the availability of CRMs and nowadays nearly all branches of analytical chemistry declare an urgent need for them. Moreover CRMs are very useful tools for validation of the analytical methods and can be primarily used to give laboratories the possibility to demonstrate their method proficiency.
