In modern poultry nutrition, the links between health, disease, nutrients, feed additives, welfare and environment need to be considered. The overall objective must be to reduce stress on the bird by improving feed utilization by assisting with resistance against enteric and infectious diseases. This requires consideration of both the levels of nutrients in feeds and feed additives. Addition of antibiotics to feeds have their own limitations such as residue in broiler meat and the development of resistant bacteria with possible spread of pathogens to human population. Undoubtedly, antibiotics control pathogen. However, feeding of sub-therapeutic levels favours resistant population of bacteria rendering the future therapeutic dose as ineffective. Therapeutic levels create residues in organs and tissues of treated birds. A possible solution for this problem is the use of an alternate organic feed additives such as probiotics and prebiotics.
