Islam and the traditional Dagbon culture have established an endearing rapport since the inception of the religion among the Dagbamba. This relationship has been noted in many areas of life. However, it has been foremost in the traditional political institutions and structures of the state so much so that the Dagbon has been labelled as an Islamised state. Right from the time of the 16th King of Dagbon, Na Zangina, Dagbon traditional structures and entities have exhibited strong elements of Islam. Almost all the rulers of the state from this period bear Muslim names even though most of them cannot be described as Muslims because of their notoriety for worship of traditional deities and ancestors of the land.
