In preparing this Compendium, the ordinary form of ques tion and answer has been avoided, as incompatible with the character designed for it, and as occupying, with meagre questions, space that might be more advantageously employed. It is hoped that the arrangement adopted will be found at once concise and intelligible, while the authors feel assured that the mechanical execution of the work, its cepious illus tration, and neat, cheap, and convenient form, will prove all that can be desired by the student and practitioner.
