We the People is a life story research that explores the life and experiences of different refugees in comparison to the author's own life to find common themes that ultimately leads to the successes and failures of different refugees. Sambath Ouk, the author, was a Cambodian refugee himself. This book explains his struggles with identity as a refugee child who traversed different nations and cultures. He explains the draw and pressure to pursue gang life as he and his friends sought to establish a counter culture in an unfriendly environment surrounded by poverty and prejudice. This research also profoundly investigates the idea of home and how important it is for refugees to be able to once again discover it. In the end, the author offers valuable tips to help educators find success in working with refugee students.
About the author
Sambath (Sam) Ouk and his family survived the Cambodian Killing Fields and immigrated to the United States in 1982. Sam grew up in Rochester, Minnesota and has experienced the difficulties not knowing English and the American culture first hand. Now he strives to help people understand the struggles of refugees and EL students.
