Author Brian Kennedy explores the deep roots of Canada's hockey obsession, which has become an integral piece of our national mythology. From the origins of the game in Mi'kmaq culture to Olympic gold, he delves into how the game explains who we are as Canadians. From Rocket Richard to Wayne Gretzky, our heroic ideals draw from hockey culture. Rivalries between regions, languages and cities are played out in the hockey arena, and our values and spirit of identity have been shaped by the toughness and teamwork on the ice.

About the author

Brian Kennedy covers the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks for Inside Hockey and other publications. His previous books include Pond Hockey, My Country Is Hockey, Growing Up Hockey, and Living the Hockey Dream. Kennedy is an English professor at Pasadena City College.

Summary

Some schools have honour codes.
Others have handbooks.
Themis Academy has the Mockingbirds.
Themis Academy is a quiet boarding school where the students are exceptional, the faculty trust that everyone does the right thing, and the administration sees only what it wants to see - perfection.
So when Alex spends a drunken-night with a male student and awakes to evidence of a sexual encounter she can't remember, she doesn't know where to turn for help. As she slowly comes to terms with the fact that she was date raped, she enlists the help of the Mockingbirds - a secret society of her peers whose mission is to right the wrongs that the faculty and administration don't even know exist.
In standing up to her attacker, Alex discovers a strength she never knew she had and begins to understand that if you love something or someone - especially yourself - it's worth fighting for.

Foreword

Nothing bad ever happens at Themis Academy. Except when it does. That's where the Mockingbirds come in
