About the author
Karen F. Gracy is an associate professor in the School of Information at Kent State University. Her scholarly interests span cultural heritage stewardship, which encompasses preservation and conservation processes and practices; digital curation activities that consider the roles of heritage professionals and users in the lifecycle of objects and records; and knowledge representation activities such as definitions of knowledge domains, development of standards for description, and application of new technologies to improve access to cultural heritage objects.

Seit 1815 haben sich Burschenschafter nicht nur als Politiker, sondern auch als Künstler um das Gemeinwesen verdient gemacht. Dieser Band bietet eine Auswahl von Kurzbiographien verstorbener Persönlichkeiten, die zeitlebens oder zumindest in ihrer Studentenzeit Mitglied einer Burschenschaft im deutschsprachigen Raum waren und im weiteren Sinn als Künstler hervorgetreten sind. Dazu gehören Dichter, Schriftsteller, Komponisten, Musiker, Sänger, Dirigenten, Maler, Bildhauer, Architekten und Schauspieler, aber auch Literatur-, Kunst- und Musikwissenschaftler.
Oft erstmals gewürdigt werden auch weniger bekannte Burschenschafter, die ihren Lebensunterhalt in anderen Berufen tätig verdienten (etwa als Ärzte, Lehrer, Juristen und Ingenieure), sich aber quasi ‚nebenberuflich‘ als Künstler einen Namen gemacht haben. Die knapp gefassten Texte umfassen auch ein Werk- und Literaturverzeichnis. Der Band wird durch ein detailliertes Personenregister und ein Verzeichnis der verwendeten Literatur ergänzt.
