Il giorno 27 luglio 1930 Caselli scriveva al giornale quotidiano Il Telegrafo: "Domani partirò dalla Spezia a trotto d'asino per scoprire la Lunigiana. Questa regione, sebbene nota da secoli, ha lembi, perché non toccati da comodi mezzi di comunicazione, lontani da strade rotabili, ancora sconosciuti ed ignorati dai più". Nessun libro potrebbe essere più indicato per dare l'idea di un territorio che dal 1930, anno in cui fu scritto, è cambiato così poco. A parte alcuni centri nelle poche zone pianeggianti dove si sono impiantate piccole e gracili industrie, la Lunigiana è infatti ancora oggi un luogo senza tempo. Colma di monti come piramidi di smeraldo, solcata da valli nel cui fondo scorrono torrenti bellissimi anche nei nomi, Caprio, Verde, Sassino o Civiglia, con sullo sfondo la bizzarria geologica del finto ghiaccio dei marmi bianchi delle Alpi Apuane, con mille tra pievi romaniche e chiese colme di affreschi, dipinti, sculture e quant'altro, è nei fatti una delle rare "regioni naturali" italiane sostanzialmente ancora intatte.
