"Rebus sic stantibus", lo scritto presente ha la natura di un saggio assolutamente introduttivo. Ciò tuttavia non significa che sia privo di un marchio peculiare. Tutt'altro: al di là della trattazione dei principali rappresentanti e delle principali tendenze della tradizione teologica occidentale, esso sottopone, in maniera quasi minuta, le questioni di volta in volta esaminate alla prova critica dell'insegnamento ecclesiale ortodosso; e questo non con il proposito di aggiungere - alla serie di quelli già esistenti - ancora un testo violentemente polemico contro la tradizione cristiana occidentale, ma con il duplice obiettivo, da un lato, di familiarizzarci criticamente con un "ignoto a noi" così noto e, dall'altro, di tentare di conoscere noi stessi attraverso l'osservatorio specifico della storia del pensiero teologico. La conoscenza critica dell'Europa occidentale è e resta incompiuta nella misura in cui viene ignorata o sottovalutata la chiarificazione dei fondamenti spirituali e teologici della sua civiltà. Lo si afferma sulla base della valutazione (giusta, a mio avviso) di Durkheim, secondo cui il fenomeno religioso si rivela la dominante che definisce la formazione sociale, visto che funziona come asse di strutturazione della "coscienza collettiva". La religione è ciò che rende possibile l'emergere del sociale; e vi è società nel momento in cui essa stessa si comprende come tale.
