En pratique, dans les chansons françaises en vers masculins, l'assonance paraît souvent se confondre avec une rime qui ne serait pas pour l'oeil, cela a cause de la rareté des oxytons, où les parlers du Nord font sentir la consonne finale; mais à considérer les vers femi nins, leur assonance ne fait pas doute: les quelques pièces où l'on observe un effort vers la rime parfaite appartiennent toutes à une époque relativement mo derne.
