L'opéra italien avait d'ailleurs tout ce qu il fallait pour plaire à un public futile et d'une éducation musicale très primitive: mélodie facile, agréable, implacablement coulée dans le même moule, harmonie réduite à sa plus sim ple expression, ne couvrant jamais la voix du chanteur et accompagnant modestement ses fioritures. Mais les Italiens n'arrivent encore que les seconds par ordre chronologique: la première manifestation du théâtre musical que nous fournit l'histoire, le ]en de Robin et de Marion, a pour auteur un trouvère Artésien, Adam de la Halle, surnommé le Bossu d'arras. Cejen fut donné à Naples en 1285. Il reste peu probable qu'il ait servi de modèle aux compositeurs des Ecoles Florentine et Napoli taine Adam de la Halle trouva instinctive ment la formule de l'opéra-comique; les Flo rentins devaient, trois cents ans plus tard, arriver à la tragédie musicale par leurs recher ches dans l'art antique et la logique de leurs déductions.
