Bien que dans cet ouvrage je me sois surtout proposé, ainsi que je le disais dans la préface du premier volume, de dresser im tableau des idées populaires en France et dans les pays de langue française à l'aurore du vingtième siècle, je n'ai pas manqué de noter et de placer, à côté de ceue constatés notre époque, les traits qui se rencontrent dans les anciens écrivains qui ont fait du folk - lore sans le savoir j'ai consulté non seule ment les livres, assez rares antérieurement à 1801, dans lesquels ils se trouvent en quantités appréciables, mais aussi les oeuvres de toutes sortes, même celles des conteurs, des fantaisistes et des poètes. Ces lectures m'ont fourni plusieurs centaines de faits qu'il était intéressant de rapprocher de Ceue qui ont été relevés depuis le commencement du XIX° siècle. Si l'on songe que la curiosité qui s'attache aum choses populaires est toute ma derne, le nombre de celles qui sont parvenues jusqu'à nous sous la forme écrite, ne laisse pas d'être considérable, et l'on peut en conclure que la plupart de celles qui ont été recueillies de nos jours étaient courantes aaa: siècles passés.
