Excerpt from The History of the World, Vol. 1 of 3: From the Reign of Alexander to That of Augustus, Comprehending the Latter Ages of European Greece, and the History of the Greek Kingdoms in Asia and Africa, From Their Foundation to Their Destruction; With a Preliminary Survey of Alexander's Conquests, An

After the example of the First of historians, in point not only of time but of merit, I have inquired, as he does on nearly a similar occasionik, who they were, those ancient and once illu strions nations subdued and long governed by the Greeks and Macedonians: in what characteristic particulars they either agreed with or di¿'ered from each other: what had been their pub suits, and what were their attainments.
