Excerpt from Émile Et Hélène: A French Primer
MY dear children, this little French book has been written all for you. There are no pictures in it, because I am sure you know everything that is spoken of in the story. Perhaps you will say that fairies are mentioned in it, and that you have never seen a fairy. Neither have 1, neither has the publisher of this book. But perhaps some of you who read the story may have been luckier. If you have, you know exactly what a fairy looks like; if you have not, why you don't. And then supposing, just for the sake of argument, that nobody has ever seen a fairy, how is the artist to draw one? The thing can't be done, so I have not tried to do it.
The story is all about a little boy Émile and his sister Hélène and their cousins and aunts.
