La prima cosa, di cui dobbiamo occuparci, si è di chiarire quel che significhi cercar l'origine dei popoli ari o, come anche si chia mano comunemente, indo-europei: se e in quali termini sussista il problema, e quali ne siano le condizioni fondamentali, e a quali que stioni s'intrecci o si subordini. Ciò è necessario, in primo luogo, per l'indole sintetica del nostro lavoro; e poi anche perchè fu appunto la insufficiente determinazione di quei dati, che indusse o permise quasi tutti gli errori delle dottrine tradizionali.
