De tout temps il s'est trouvé des papes qui, par intérêt de famille ou pour éviter un schisme, ont essayé de choisir eux-mêmes leur successeur. Tout pouvoir établi visait alors a se perpétuer, soit par l'hérédité proprement dite, soit par une désigna tion anticipée. Mais les cardinaux repoussèrent à l'unanimité une combinaison qui annulait leur droit électoral. L'opinion de l'église, peu favorable aux pratiques de cette espèce, répugnait à dénaturer le caractère de la plus haute fonction religieuse. Les recommandations que Célestin III, mourant, fit à son entourage n'curent aucun succès.
