On a trop dit que les orientaux, en dehors de l'inde et de la Chine, n'avaient jamais connu le théâtre. On aura la preuve de la fausseté de cette assertion dans le chapitre de cet ouvrage que je consacre à l'examen des Te'azie's ou des Mystères persans. Ces belles pièces n'ont été traduites jusqu'ici dans aucune langue eu ropéenne. Si j'en crois un poete turc de mes amis, il existerait même en arabe des dialogues dramatiques, dans le genre des anciens pasos espagnols qui au raient été représentés à la cour des Khalifes. L'opi nion de M. Renan sur le Cantique des Cantiques, qui, selon lui, ne serait qu'une pièce de théâtre récitée dans le harem du roi Salomon, pourrait bien n'être pas une gratuite hypothèse.
