Le corps de saint Gilles fut déposé dans un reliquaire en 925; son tombeau a été retrouvé le 29 août 1865. Cette découverte a une très grande importance sous tous les rapports. Elle prouve que le corps du saint abbé ne fut point transporté a Toulouse au moment de la guerre des Albigeois, ou que, s'il fut transporté dans cette ville, il ne tarda pas a en revenir. La relique que l'on conserve dans la basilique de Saint Sernin n'est qu'une très petite portion du corps.
