Les articles qui composent ce livre ont paru pour la plu part en ces dernières années dans diverses revues. Si je les réunis ici, en les remaniant aureste et en les complétant par plusieurs.morceaux nouveaux, c'est que tous se rat tachent à un même ensemble, et qu'il s'en peut dégager, je crois, une vue générale, assez complète et assez claire, de ce que fut la civilisation byzantine. C'est ce lien et cette unité de pensée que je voudrais indiquer en quelques mots.
