Le terrain d'où cet échantillon avait été pris représente, selon la sup position de M. Charcot, l'extrémité d'une moraine, fréquentée probable ment par les Pingouins et autres oiseaux polaires.
L'autre échantillon, que nous désignerons par B, a été recueilli au sommet d'un rocher qui, pendant l'été, se couvrait de quelque végétation. Dans les deux cas, la terre a été recueillie d'une façon stérile dans des ¿acons stérilisés d'une contenance de 200 centimètres cubes a peu près.
