A causa di queste alterazioni di forma, costituzione e dispo sizione degli elementi epiteliali, il funzionamento normale di essi viene ad essere alterato. Infatti anche la dove l'epitelio mostra soltanto leggiere modificazioni, le cellule caliciformi sono rare e scarse, hanno dimensioni minori delle normali, sono piuttosto deformate e presentano un orientamento irregolare corrisponden te a quello delle cellule vicine.
