Wo dagegen die Entwicklung ihren Ausgang von Gameten nimmt, konnen wir darauf rechnen, daß das heranwachsende Tier eine mehr oder minder lange Zeit aller Skelettbildungen entbehrt. Diese Periode wird namentlich in solchen Fällen, wo es sich um besonders große Formen handelt, nicht ganz kurz sein können, da das Individuum erst einmal die für die be treffende Art charakteristische Größe wenigstens annähernd erreicht haben muß.
Es kommt weiter aber auch noch der sehr leicht denkbare Fall hinzu, den Haeckel schon hervorhebt, daß ein Tier sein Skelett durch irgend einen besonderen Umstand verliert und infolgedessen für eine Zeitlang skelettlos wird.
