L'une des lois d'Albert Einstein n'a rien d'une équation à la E = mc² et mériterait pourtant d'être aussi célèbre. Il écrivait en effet dans les dernières années d'une vie consacrée à tirer la langue aux idées reçues, et pas seulement en physique : « Ce qui donne son sens à l'existence personnelle, c'est la conviction que notre combat et notre action sont justes ; mais si cette conviction n'est pas tempérée par l'humour, on devient insupportable. » Einstein aimait rire de lui-même et taquiner Dieu ; il savait aussi faire rire les autres pour réveiller les consciences. Sans son humour, si bien condensé dans le présent recueil, il aurait certes été un génie scientifique, mais pas ce bon génie devenu le plus populaire des savants.
