This rough and ready port has a softer side too. There are wonderful parks, coffee shops (and even a coffee museum). It has specialist record stores, a miniature city and an Art Deco tunnel that runs beneath the Elbe. Our guide has all you need for a few days in this historic town - where to eat, drink, shop and what to see.

Small and tightly focused, our guides are concise city tours in a handy fold-out format that slips neatly into an intrepid traveler's pocket. Our aim is to introduce readers to new places as well as re-evaluating familiar ones, and we are as keen to find a new way to see the Louvre as we are to discover an untouched 1950s café. Informed by on-the-ground research, our one-sheet guides and maps uncover what makes a city special. They are written and researched in-house, and an illustrator who has been specially chosen for the subject designs each one. Whether it's an excursion into the greener areas of London (more numerous than you might think), Paris's beatnik bookshops, the otherworldly landscape just outside Reykjavik, or the watering holes of Brooklyn, we highlight what makes a place distinctive with our specialist knowledge and illustrations with vintage charm. In A6 format, the guides fit easily into a pocket and then expand out to A3 or A2 to display the attractions of each city. Each fine-quality sheet is litho-printed in England on 100% recycled stock.

About the author

Most guides try to tell you everything there is to know about a city, we just tell you how to enjoy it. It is our aim to show the reader what makes a place distinctive, to shed light on obscure locations as well as revisiting well-known ones with a fresh perspective. We research each city the old-fashioned way: asking friends, acquaintances, cab drivers and concierges for their tips and then walking, tasting, sipping, and peering into doorways and down alleys. We turn that research into a compact guide with enough suggestions to keep you entertained, with a list of shops, bars, restaurants, cafes, galleries, museums and parks, each one carefully described.

Summary

This prosperous port city has diversions to suit every traveller. Coffee and cake, all-night beers, fish sandwiches, vintage clothes for sale by the kilo, museums, book shops and, of course, all that water: canals, lakes and the mighty River Elbe. From wealthy suburbs to the old docks, our 30 carefully selected suggestions for some of the best things to see, do, eat and drink are Authentically Hamburg.
