Or, c'est un fait que des trois genres auxquels se ramène, d'après Vitruve, l'art dra matique, celui-ci n'est, durant un demi-siècle, sur la scène française, ni le moins riche, ni le moins vivant. Le catalogue dressé par Beauchamps donne un dé menti à son Discours. Je voudrais chercher les causes de cette faveur du genre pastoral, indiquer ses ori gines, les divers moments de son histoire, la nature, enfin, de son influence.
