El General, que pertenece a una generación endurecida en las guerras civiles, es, a pesar de su edad, fuerte y sano: enviuda dos veces y tiene numerosa prole. Sin embargo, no vacila, a la edad ya patriarcal de 70 años, el contraer matrimonio por tercera vez, y así lo hace con una joven de 19 años, Doña Virginia Tapias. De este matrimonio desigual nacen todavía tres hijos, de los cua les sólo el último, nuestro futuro pintor, logra sobrevivir; los otros dos hermanos mueren tempranamente.
