C'est un peuple digne, puissant et fidèle à ses traditions. La civilisation Lunda a été une des plus étendues en Afrique entre le XVIIIe et le XIXe siècle et elle est toujours bien vivante au XXIe siècle. À Musumba, capitale impériale au sud de la République démocratique du Congo, les rites sont toujours suivis avec ferveur par la population et les rois qui se succèdent disposent encore d'une autorité coutumière reconnue.
Grand connaisseur de la région, le photographe italien Angelo Turconi a voulu montrer la vitalité de ce peuple bantou, qui garde un attachement fort à sa culture ancestrale malgré les découpages frontaliers survenus au moment de la colonisation. Avec le photographe John Anthony et l'anthropologue Manuela Palmeirim, qui signe une étude documentée sur la culture Lunda, il nous fait voyager dans une Afrique fidèle à ses traditions et solidement ancrée dans le présent.
They are dignified people, powerful and faithful to their traditions. The Lunda civilisation was one of the largest in Africa in the 18th and mid 19th century and it remains vibrant in the 21st century. In Musumba, their imperial capital located in the South of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the rites continue to be practiced with fervour by the population, and the dynasty of kings still holds renowned traditional authority even today.
The Italian photographer Angelo Turconi, who is well acquainted with the region, shows the vitality of Bantu people, who maintain a strong attachment to their culture and social structure despite the border divisions which occurred during the colonisation period. Together with John Anthony, photographer, and the anthropologist Manuela Palmeirim, who has authored a documented study on the Lunda culture, he takes us on a journey to a part of Africa which preserves many of its traditions and yet is firmly rooted in the present.
