La partie la meilleure de la premiere édition est le commentaire joint à la traduction. On ne m'occusera pas d' outrecuidance si je dis que ce commentaire dépas sait sur beaucoup de points l'état des connaissances acquises à l'époque où ila paru après plus d'un tiers de siècle, je me sens très capable de juger mon premier travail avec une entière impartialité On retrouvera, dans le second volume, ce commentaire augmenté en certaines parties, car j'avais laissé sans note plusieurs passages intéressants, notamment dans l' énumération des contes et poèmes récités aux noces d' A rcham haut, mais abrégé en d'autres, car beaucoup de notions que j'avais dû, en 186 exposer avec détail, sont maintenant entrées dans le domaine commun de la science, et peuvent être résumées brièvement.
