About the author

Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) was born in Vienna, the son of a prominent Jewish doctor, and studied medicine at the University of Vienna. In later years he devoted his time to writing and was successful as a novelist, dramatist and short story writer. Schnitzler's work shows a remarkable ability to create atmosphere and a profound understanding of human motives.Alexander Starritt is the author of the novels The Beast and We Germans. He is the winner of the 2021 Dayton Literary Peace Prize and has been shortlisted for the Prix Femina and Prix Médicis, among others. His translations of A Chess Story by Stefan Zweig and Late Fame by Arthur Schnitzler are also published by Pushkin Press.
