Ces romans sur Charlemagne et les héros de la Table - Ronde eurent, au x1u° siècle, une grande vogue. Quoique composés pour la plupart de dix, vingt et trente mille vers, ces poemes n'en furent pas moins appelés chansons. Ils formaient, quand ils étaient écrits en volume, un véritable meuble. Aussi s'est-on demandé si ces chansons étaient chantées.
