Excerpt from The Ferry-Boy and the Financier
The materials of which the following narrative is composed have been drawn from authentic sources Yet it has been my study to give the spirit of the scenes and incidents described rather than weary the reader with dry details To this end, when necessary imaginary conversations and occasionally fictitious circumstances, have been introduced; while, at the same timm the most conscientious care has been used in depicting, without suppression or exaggeration those strong traits of character which rendered the subject of this biography remarkable among boys.
