Die Unionen der jüngsten mesozoischen Formation und (les Tertiär sind die einzigen, welche nicht nur von Anfang an als solche erkannt, sondern auch bis heute ohne allen Zweifel anerkannt worden sind. Die ersten finden sich in den Gebilden der unteren Kreide, sowohl in echt marinen (hilsthon), als in solchen von zweifelhaft mariner Bildungsweise. Aus jenen werden sie erwähnt von S ee b ach und B ö hm aus diesem hatte sie schon Man tells) an den für Unio so bezeichnenden Hilfsmuskeleindrücken nachge wiesen und als Unio valderiisis bekannt gemacht; später wurde, besonders von W. Du n ker, noch eine Anzahl charakteristischer Arten an's Licht gezogen. Auch aus der mittleren und und den grossen Binnenseeablagerungen des Tertiär bis zu den jüngsten ¿uviatilen Absätzen kennt man zahlreiche Unionen, die sich meist.
