Le rôle des canonniers et pionniers était limité au service des pièces, à l'exclusion du combat corps à corps. La garde du maté riel d'artillerie au camp et à la bataille était confiée à des troupes spéciales, en général Suisses ou lansquenets. Dans les sièges, les travaux de sape pour la protection des batteries étaient exécutés par des troupes d'infanterie.
