A tempestuous saga beginning in 1839, when a devastating storm struck Ireland. First published in the 1980s, it brings to life an entire generation of Irish history. The author was the mother of Tim Pat Coogan, who is writing a new introduction.

About the author

Born in 1905, Beatrice Coogan began her journalism career at the age of seventeen and went on to write for the Evening Herald. She was also an actress with the Abbey Theatre and Radio Éireann.

Summary

Born during a storm in 1839, Sterrin grows up during Ireland's darkest years, but sustaining her throughout it all is the forbidden love she harbours for a household servant. A tempestuous novel of love and courage.

Additional text

Romantic Ireland may be dead and gone, but a good deal of it is preserved in Beatrice Coogan's mammoth novel. As for drama, there's hardly time to draw breath from the tempestuous, storm-tossed opening pages' Irish Times.
