A palpable breast lump is a common diagnostic problem to the both attending clinician and pathologist. Aspiration cytology is simple, reliable, reproducible, less traumatic, cost effective, less time consuming with a high diagnostic accuracy.In spite of the numerous advantages of diagnostic cytology,there remains a gray zone of breast lesion with a potential for error.To overcome such error recently, IAC has proposed a standardized reporting format of breast fine-needle aspiration biopsy cytology.which will improve the quality and reproducibility of reports along with promotion of quality assurance.The study focuses on cytomorphological features and the scoring criteria considered by various author for reporting breast carcinoma. the different grading methods have been discussed for their advantages, limitations and practical applicability.The study aims to promote the cytological grading of breast lesions with emphasis on uniformity,objectivity and reproducibility.

About the author










Dr Subhashish Das is Professor of Pathology at Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College,Kolar.He has undergone special training on cytological techniques at St. John Medical College, Bangalore.His field of interest includes medical education,immunohematology and cytopathology.He has several publications to his credit and is currently pursuing his Ph.D.
